Taught the Insurance Company a Few Lessons.

It has been a while since I have given an update with my fight against the insurance company in regards to their blatant discrimination against the girls with their trauma insurance.  For those who are not up to date, scroll down my blog page and you will see the previous updates.

I have to admit it had been a while since I had heard from either OnePath Insurance which honestly is pretty slack on their part or from my finance manager.  However I did know that he was going to go speak to higher levels of ANZ about this problem.

Well, I have had taught the insurance company a few lessons in regards to individuals with autism.  I was expecting them to still say no we are not going to cover them but I will insure the girls with their trauma policy.

However, the win does not just stop there and I will continue to make sure that this occurs but they are actually going to change their exclusions and no longer will lump children under the one umbrella.  I am going to research all insurance companies who offer child trauma insurance policies and I will make sure that this does not happen to families again.  Plus I am going to take the next step, of sending information to finance managers who offer these policies so that they too can fight for their clients.  If it wasn’t for James from ANZ having a child on the spectrum, I do not think I would have won this fight.  All I have to do is provide them with their school report which honestly I am not sure what the point is but I am happy to show them their achievements.

There is absolutely no reason for children to be excluded from trauma policies and this discrimination really needs to stop for good.  I will keep updating my progress on this issue.

IT’S TIME FOR INSURANCE COMPANIES TO STOP DISCRIMINATING AGAINT INDIVIDUALS WITH ASD!!!!!

The under writer gave me a call and he started the phone very confident (I think he took the approach) of making it sound that they were not going to cover the girls with trauma insurance because of their medical history.  I once again asked which of the girls medical doctors they contacted and he said that they don’t call them. The under writer stated that just because they didn’t cover them for trauma insurance now, they would relook at it when they are 18.  That gave me a very quick look at what the girls will be in for at 18 years of age.

By this stage, he was sounding pretty confident in what he was saying until………………… I asked why.  Now I would suggest you hang on to your seat for his reason as I am sure anyone could pull this reason apart.  He stated that he could not cover the girls in trauma insurance is because “they could not predict how the girls with develop neurologically, developmentally, behaviourally up till the age of 18.”

The first set of questions that I asked was which traumas are caused by Autism (I seriously thought I missed something).  I asked him does Autism cause:

  • Brain tumours and cancers?
  • Heart attacks?
  • Brain conditions?
  • Meningitis?
  • Blindness?
  • Deafness?
  • Mobility conditions?
  • Blood disorders?
  • Body organ conditions?
  • Severe burns?
  • Coma?
  • Diabetes?
  • Terminal Illness?

Will you be surprised that the answers were NO?

I asked him when can anyone possibly say how a child will develop physically, neurologically or behaviourally up to the age of 18?

I asked him what scientific evidence did they have to prove their reasoning?  No answer.

I asked him what scientific evidence did he have that autism causes the traumas?  None.

I asked him what evidence do they have in regards to the benefits of early intervention?

I asked him what evidence do you have in relation to the differences between girls with autism and boys with autism?

I asked him are you even talking about my daughters as individual applications?  Um no because we don’t know how to predict how anyone of them grow developmentally, neurologically or behaviourally.

So I wanted a clear picture, I said so you are lumping them all on some severe picture of Autism.

I am going to leave this post where it is because my hands are shaking and I can feel my anger rising.  This is discrimination at its worst for individuals with Autism.

Blatant Discrimination Against Individuals With Autism

Part 2

I can not believe the blatant discrimination against individuals with autism by the insurance company. If you have just come across this post you might like to go to:

PART 1

IT’S TIME FOR INSURANCE COMPANIES TO STOP DISCRIMINATING AGAINT INDIVIDUALS WITH ASD!!!!!

The Finance Manager felt once we sent that information, we should have no issue with getting this cover for the girls.  He was happy knowing that the medical officer was going to deal with the situation.  Time of course went past and I had actually slightly forgotten about it all.  Until we got a letter in the mail.

We were told that the girls could not be covered for trauma insurance because of their medical history.  Not only that, I had to give them a doctors details so that they could send a letter to my doctor.  I was astounded to say the least!

So I decided to play dumb.  I rang the insurance company and asked them which doctor they contacted if they had their “medical history”.  I was told that they DO NOT actually call the doctors with the children.  But I said, you have claimed you have their medical history which has denied them trauma insurance.  I asked them what did they find out that the girls had in their medical history that I did not know about.  The person replied that they only have Autism.

So I questioned so which trauma is caused by Autism?  The person said none but he isn’t involved in the underwriting.  So he promised me that he would have an underwriter contact me the following day as he saw what I was saying.

At this stage I thought maybe this might be ok as he saw what point I was making.  I then contacted the financial planner and he also was blown away that the girls were denied.  He said he will follow it up with the insurance people.

I then rang Amaze Victoria (Autism Victoria) who were also blown away by the situation but sadly knew this story all to well.  She suggested ringing The Victorian Human Rights Commission and a couple of other agencies for their advice.  The Human Rights Commission Disability explained that I could make a written complaint against the insurance company and they could help mediate with the insurance company.  I said to them I would wait and see what the company said when I spoke to the insurance company.

Part 3 will be out very soon as you will here the real reason for denying the girls trauma insurance and it only gets worse.  This could be a hard post to write as I am still feeling upset about it when I think about it.  If you have been discriminated against by an insurance company in relation to Autism, I would love to here at info@coachingforlifetimechange.com.au.

It’s Time For Insurance Companies to STOP Discriminating!

IT’S TIME FOR INSURANCE COMPANIES TO STOP DISCRIMINATING AGAINT INDIVIDUALS WITH ASD!!!!!

PART ONE

We have been tidying up our superannuation, life insurance for the last couple of months and the banks finance manager who has been helping us with the applications suggested that we also apply for child trauma insurance.  We thought how fantastic this would be because we knew two children who had recently been diagnosed with cancer.

The process for me to apply for life insurance was beyond a breech of privacy.  I admitted all of my medical history and believe me, these insurance companies think that they need to have more information than the government.  I admitted depression, my Drs (the professionals) also stated it and said that I had recovered.  But they think that they needed to actually have session notes.  What an absolute invasion of privacy.

I never expected what they would do to the girls.

I expected that they would put loading onto me but I was horrified when they wanted to know more about my daughters Autism.  I gave them the official document that the government accepted for their funding packages and refused any more information.  Thank goodness, we have a fantastic finance guy, who actually has a son with Autism who gave them the same message

You are probably not surprised at this stage at all as it is all too common but wait to further parts in coming days as there has been a lot of tears, swear words, regret and determination.  Keep updated in this running battle which will never end in further parts.  If an individual with Autism has been discriminated against, I would love to hear your story through my email info@coachingforlifetimechange.com.au.
